Established in 2001, the .NAME gTLD is the only one meant for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level names remained online.

There are no special regulations on who can book a .NAME domain, but in order to keep the goal behind its establishment alive, the .NAME Registry may check who the owner is and if there is no connection between the owner and the actual domain name, the registration may be challenged.
